So, here I was with a photo of a coat and five weeks to complete the assignment. The process started with drawing a technical flat to show my instructor that I understood how the coat was to be constructed. Then, I created a muslin sample - it had to be a fully-lined and finished garment. When I was happy with the sample, I sewed the coat in beige wool.
In my 3D Design class, the first project of this semester was to make a coat based on a photo. While I have been inspired by works of other designers, I have never actually made a garment without first holding it in my hands. I often go to stores and take a detailed look at how garments are constructed and finished. This was not the case ... So, here I was with a photo of a coat and five weeks to complete the assignment. The process started with drawing a technical flat to show my instructor that I understood how the coat was to be constructed. Then, I created a muslin sample - it had to be a fully-lined and finished garment. When I was happy with the sample, I sewed the coat in beige wool. Et voila! Here is the coat. Working on this assignment was such a great experience - I find it thrilling to be able to create a garment from scratch.
