"Sisterhood": A Watercolor Study of Human Connection

I have been intrigued with the idea of sisterhood for some time now. I don't have a sister so my take on sisterhood is that of a community of women who are linked by a common interest and supportive of each other. I have friends whom I consider my sisters; I am part of a variety of groups of women. In general, relationships, care for others and self-care, and change in our lives fascinate me.

To deepen my understanding of my own relationships and sisterhood as a theme, I am creating a watercolor painting a day for the month of January. While these watercolors are abstract, they all explore the shapes and fluidity of our relationships. I read about sisterhood and make mental notes of people's points of view. Each painting has three rectangular shapes; number 3 is my favorite number and it allows me to explore the shapes freely while painting a similar idea every day.

The Czech calendar assigns a name to each day of the calendar. I am naming my paintings after the women listed in the month of January. If a male name is listed, my painting is numbered. For instance, January 2, 2018, is assigned to the name Karina. Hence, the name of my second watercolor. Linking names of my paintings allows me to think of sisterhood in a more general manner but also think of a particular woman (even if I don't know anybody by that name) I may imagine.

Each painting has a different color. Sometimes I only use one watercolor; other times I combine colors. I am drawn to the rectangular shapes and exploring textures I can achieve by playing around with the amount of water and paint. See below for the lovely variety I have experienced so far ... And January is not even over! I can't wait for the whole series to come together.

No matter what our life experiences, I believe we all strive for connection and sisterhood - connecting with women in our lives - is, for me, a way to feeling part of a community. There are so many aspects of this concept and life experience; keep checking back as I develop these watercolor paintings further.
